Back to Top Aliases and phonemes The Pronunciation Dictionary supports two methods for specifying pronunciation. Phonemes apply to Authoring AI (Private Beta) Brainshark narration and are available only in English. Alias A text substitution that tells Authoring AI to read one word or phrase as another. Use aliases when a word isn't being pronounced as expected, and you can represent the correct pronunciation using standard words. For example, if "stethoscope" wasn't pronounced correctly, you could add the alias "steth oh scope" so AuthoringAI reads it as three separate words with the right emphasis. Phoneme A notation using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) that gives you precise control over pronunciation. Use phonemes when you need a specific syllable emphasis or when an alias isn't accurate enough. Enclose phoneme entries in slashes, for example: /ˈdɛfɪbrɪleɪtər/. Several free tools online let you generate IPA notation from standard words. For example, to define a phoneme for "defibrillator," you could look up each component and combine them: /ˈdɛfɪbrɪleɪtər/. Note: Phoneme pronunciations apply to individual English words only. If you need to specify a pronunciation for a name or phrase containing multiple words, define each word separately. Note: English is a lexical stress language, meaning some syllables in multi-syllable words are emphasized more than others. Include lexical stress markers in your IPA notation for the most accurate results.
